Afternic vs Sedo vs Atom for sellers

Two roads diverging in a forest

Afternic vs Sedo is really a question of where your buyer is likely to be searching, and Atom adds a third answer for brandable names. Every term below comes from the venues’ own help and price pages, checked 27 October 2026. For a wider view of every venue and its fees, see where to sell domain names; for the click-by-click steps, see how to list a domain for sale.

Distribution and reach

Afternic. GoDaddy Help describes Afternic as “a GoDaddy company” and says listing “includes your domain in search results on over 100 top registrars and reseller websites collectively”. There are two levels: the Standard network, and “the Premium network, which is also known as Fast Transfer network”. They are the same thing. Afternic’s partner page lists registrars that show all listings, including GoDaddy.com, Namecheap, DynaDot, Name.com, Namesilo and PorkBun, and others, such as 123Reg, Enom and Tucows, that show only Fast Transfer listings.

Fast Transfer has rules. Afternic Help says the name “must have a Buy Now price”, that price “must be below $100,000 USD”, the domain must be “registered for 60 days or longer with the current registrar”, and “The registration cannot expire in 30 days or less”. It must also sit at a partner registrar with a supported TLD. Without Fast Transfer, “sales require manual fulfillment on your part”.

Connected network cables

Sedo. Every Sedo listing goes into SedoMLS automatically. Sedo says it “partners with leading registrars and domain service providers to distribute your domain names globally via SedoMLS”, and explains in its SedoMLS commission FAQ that each partner charges Sedo a fee, so a partner-sourced sale costs the seller 20%. SedoMLS Premium lets Sedo transfer a Buy Now name straight away if it sits at a participating registrar. Partners may mark the price up, but Sedo says sellers “will always receive the price they set”.

Atom. Atom runs its own marketplace and checkout. Your listing tier decides exposure: Standard has “Limited Visibility”, Plus adds partner sites and extra Atom marketplaces, and Premium adds marketing and a chance at the Ultra Premium Marketplace. Only Premium is curated: Atom says it accepts “about 10% of submitted domains”. Its acceptance guidelines favour short, pronounceable brandables.

Commission and minimums

Afternic’s two official pages word its rate differently, so both are shown. GoDaddy Help gives 25% standard, 15% when the domain uses GoDaddy aftermarket nameservers at the time of sale, plus 5% “for accounts with an active Afternic Boost program”. Afternic’s own fees page states 30% and 20%, each including a “+5% Default Boost Benefit”. Boost can be switched off at any time. The Premium network costs nothing extra: “Standard Afternic commission rates apply” to both networks.

The conditions matter. Sedo’s 10% needs a Buy Now (or Buy Now or Best Offer) price and the domain parked at Sedo with the ads page or sales landing page active; otherwise it is 15%. On a $5,000 sale that is $500, $750 or $1,000 at 10%, 15% or 20%. At Atom the same sale costs $375 on Standard or $1,250 on Premium. Afternic’s own example: a $1,000 sale pays $850 on aftermarket nameservers without Boost and $750 on other nameservers. How to switch is in Afternic nameservers: what they do and how to set them.

Payouts: methods and timing

Afternic pays “once the delivery is completed”, and a transaction “can take anywhere from 0 to 20 days, depending on the fulfillment method”. Methods include ACH, eCheck, paper check, PayPal, wire and “Good As Gold” credit to your GoDaddy account, with fees from $0 (PayPal) to $26 (some wires).

Sedo releases the money “once a change in ownership has been confirmed”. Payouts go through Adyen to your bank, using local methods such as SEPA. Marketplace and SedoMLS sales can no longer be paid to PayPal. Seller verification is needed after your first sale, and payouts are then “typically processed on the next working day”.

A calendar with a payment date

Atom says payouts “are typically processed within 1-3 days after they are requested”, by PayPal, Payoneer, BitPay (1% fee for crypto) or Wise. You first push the name to an Atom account or hand over the auth code, and buyers “may cancel their purchase at any time before the domain transfer is complete”.

Listing control

Afternic gives you a binding Buy Now price, a hidden floor price for its sales team (it suggests 20–30% below Buy Now), and a minimum offer set automatically at 65% of Buy Now. Lease to own needs a Buy Now price between $495 and $5,000,000. Listings are reviewed within 48 hours.

Sedo offers the most formats: Buy Now, Make Offer, marketplace and direct auctions, auction events and brokerage. No Sedo lease-to-own option was found. Its minimums depend on the TLD category: .com, .net, .org, .io and .ai are all in Category I, with no minimum fee.

A panel of control sliders

Atom offers Buy It Now, Make Offer (with a minimum, “typically 70% or above”), Request Price and payment plans of up to 36 months above $10,000. Premium limits Make Offer and Request Price to 10% of your portfolio each, and removal needs 30 days’ notice. Premium listings “are exclusive to the Atom platform” apart from approved partners; Standard and Plus are non-exclusive. Afternic and Sedo state no exclusivity rule on the pages checked. Where a niche marketplace fits alongside

If your name is an aged domain with a clean history, the SERPHeroes marketplace is a smaller venue built for SEO buyers. Each listing shows the registry age, an archive spam scan and whether ownership was verified by a DNS record or a file on the domain. Listing is free; when a domain sells, SERPHeroes keeps a flat 10% commission, taken through Escrow.com. You can add one domain or bulk-upload a list. It does not have the reach of Afternic or Sedo, so many sellers list on several venues; that is your choice. For a buyer’s view of the venues, see the best domain marketplace.
