CJ Affiliate for publishers: approval and payments

A calendar and an invoice on a desk

Most confusion about CJ Affiliate comes from treating the dashboard figure as earnings. It is not. CJ, the network once called Commission Junction, moves every commission through a sequence of stages, and the advertiser can still change it during the early ones. Understanding that sequence explains almost every “where is my money” question.

The payment detail below comes from CJ’s own explainer on Junction, its blog, published in May 2022. Payment terms change, so treat the dates as a guide and confirm the current terms in your account at the time of writing (October 2026) and before you plan cash flow around them.

How the CJ Affiliate payment cycle works

CJ’s article Understanding CJ’s Publisher Payment Cycle, by Gia Dal Pozzo, sets out four stages a commission passes through.

StageWhat it meansCan the advertiser still change it?
NewAwaiting advertiser reviewNot yet locked
ExtendedHeld for one extra pay periodNot yet locked
Locked“transactions can no longer be edited by the advertiser”No
ClosedPassed compliance reviewNo; counts towards your payout

The stage that matters for your bank balance is Closed. New and Extended commissions are provisional. A return, a cancelled order or a failed validation can still remove them, which is why a good week in the dashboard can shrink by the time it is paid.

When commissions lock and when CJ pays

On the standard cycle, commissions lock on the 10th of the following month. CJ’s own example: “if a transaction took place on December 3rd, then the commissions would lock on January 10th.” A sale on 28 December locks on the same date, so the wait from sale to lock ranges from under two weeks to about six.

Not every advertiser uses the standard cycle. CJ describes custom cycles of 7 to 60 days and open-ended cycles as well. Check each advertiser’s terms when you join their programme, because a long or open-ended cycle can leave commissions provisional far longer than the standard one.

Payment itself follows on fixed dates. In CJ’s words: “Payments are made around the 20th (for all currencies) and around the 28th (for currencies USD, GBP, or EUR).” If you are paid in one of those three currencies, there are two payment points a month; in other currencies, one.

The minimum payout is yours to set

CJ does not impose one threshold on everyone. Publishers set their own minimum: “Once your closed commission balance reaches your minimum payment amount, you will be eligible for payout.” Only closed commissions count towards it.

That gives you a lever most networks do not. A low minimum means smaller, more frequent payments; a higher one batches them. If your bank or payment method charges per transfer, a higher minimum can save fees. If cash flow matters more, keep it low. Either way, set it deliberately when you open your CJ Affiliate account rather than leaving whatever default appears.

Remember how the minimum interacts with the stages. A balance can look well above your minimum in the dashboard while most of it is still New or Extended, and none of that counts. If you are close to the threshold at the end of a month, the payment you receive depends on how much of that month’s activity has closed, not on the headline total. Review the minimum again as your earnings grow.

Getting your CJ Affiliate account approved

CJ’s payment article does not cover publisher approval, and approval terms are the kind of thing that changes, so check the current publisher sign-up requirements on CJ itself. What can be said generally is that networks and their advertisers judge whether a site is real, whether it is compliant, and whether it fits the products on offer.

  • A finished site. Published content in the niche you plan to promote, an about page and a way to contact you.
  • Visible disclosure. Our affiliate disclosure guide covers where it needs to sit and how to word it.
  • A clear promotion method. Describe how you send traffic: reviews, comparisons, newsletter, social. Vague answers invite rejection.
  • Relevant pages before you apply. An advertiser checking your site should find content in its category.

Joining the network and joining an advertiser’s programme are separate decisions, much as they are on other platforms. Apply first to advertisers whose products you already cover, because those are the applications you can justify with existing pages.

CJ Affiliate alternatives and when to use them

The choice between networks is mostly about where your advertisers are. If the brands you want to promote run on CJ, you join CJ. If they run elsewhere, no payment cycle makes up for it. Most established affiliate sites end up on more than one network.

The main CJ Affiliate alternative for many publishers is impact.com, which checks your identity and channels at the marketplace stage and then leaves each brand to approve you; our guide to joining impact.com walks through it. If you had ShareASale links, the platform closed on 6 October 2025 and publishers moved to Awin; see ShareASale to Awin for what to replace.

To compare programmes across networks fairly, compare earnings per click rather than commission rates. A high rate on a product your readers do not buy is worth less than a modest one on something they do. The method is in our post on affiliate EPC.

Planning around the cycle

Put the stages together and the timeline is clear. A sale early in a month locks around the 10th of the next month, closes once it passes compliance review, and is paid on the next payment date after your closed balance clears your minimum. For a new account, expect a gap of more than a month between your first sale and your first payment.

Build reporting around that. Track New, Extended, Locked and Closed separately, and forecast only from Locked and Closed. Watch the share of commissions that never get beyond New; a high rate of reversals from one advertiser is a sign the traffic you send does not convert into kept orders, and the fix may be the page, not the programme.

The limitation here is the source. CJ’s explainer dates from 2022, and nothing in it guarantees the dates still hold. It describes the mechanics clearly, and the stage names are the ones your dashboard will show, but the locking date, the payment dates and the available cycles should all be checked against your account’s current terms. Advertisers can also run their own cycles inside CJ’s framework, so two programmes on the same network can pay on very different schedules. Treat this article as a map of how the system works, and your account settings as the record of how it works for you. If a figure in either disagrees with what you see paid, the payment history wins.

Frequently asked questions

When does CJ Affiliate pay publishers?

CJ’s 2022 explainer says payments are made around the 20th for all currencies and around the 28th for USD, GBP or EUR, once your closed balance reaches your minimum. Confirm current dates in your account.

What is the CJ Affiliate minimum payout?

Publishers set their own minimum payment amount. You become eligible for payout once your closed commission balance reaches it.

What does a locked commission mean on CJ?

Locked means the advertiser can no longer edit the transaction. On the standard cycle, commissions lock on the 10th of the following month.

Is CJ Affiliate the same as Commission Junction?

Yes. Commission Junction is the network’s former name; it now operates as CJ, or CJ Affiliate.

The takeaway On CJ, only closed commissions count towards payout. Standard commissions lock on the 10th of the following month and are paid around the 20th or 28th once your own minimum is met. Forecast from Locked and Closed, and check current terms.
