Is Wix good for SEO? What it handles

A website builder open on a laptop

Is Wix good for SEO? The question usually comes from someone who has read that website builders are “bad for SEO” and wants to know whether to rebuild before they start. The short answer is no rebuild needed. Wix gives you a guided setup that covers the technical basics most small sites need, and the rest of SEO, which is most of it, depends on what you publish and who links to it. That is true on any platform.

The useful version of the question is narrower: what does Wix handle for you, what does it leave undone, and where do you need to step in? That is what this post covers, using Wix’s own documentation of its SEO Setup Checklist.

What the Wix SEO Setup Checklist actually does

Wix describes the checklist as “a step-by-step checklist designed to help you get found online”. It runs in three parts, documented in the Wix Help Center article on the SEO Setup Checklist.

  • Part 1 covers your homepage information and connecting and verifying the site with Google: the homepage title, description, keywords and mobile view.
  • Part 2 covers contact details, social networks and internal links.
  • Part 3 points you to resources for improving rankings and for hiring SEO professionals.

That is a sensible order. A homepage with a clear title and description, a verified property in Google Search Console and a few internal links is a solid foundation for a new site. Nothing in it is advanced, and nothing in it needs to be. Most small sites go wrong on exactly these basics, not on anything exotic.

Who can use it, and what it needs

There are two access conditions worth knowing before you plan around the checklist. First, Wix states: “Only site owners and admin collaborators can access the SEO Setup Checklist.” If an agency or freelancer is doing the setup, they need admin access, not a lesser role.

Second, connecting the site to Google Search Console through the checklist needs a Premium plan and a connected domain. A site on a free Wix address cannot complete that step. If you are still deciding whether to upgrade, this is one practical reason to: without Search Console, you have no first-party view of how Google crawls and indexes your pages. Our guide to Search Console verification covers what verification proves and how to check it worked.

What Wix handles and what you still do

The checklist is a setup tool, not an ongoing SEO process. The table below splits what the checklist covers from what stays with you, based only on what Wix documents.

AreaThe checklist coversYou still do
HomepageTitle, description, keywords, mobile viewTitles and descriptions for every other page
Google connectionConnect and verify (Premium plan and connected domain)Read the reports and act on them
Business detailsContact details and social networksKeep them accurate as they change
Internal linksA prompt to add themA linking structure across the whole site
BlogNot analysed by the checklistAll on-page work for posts
Wix StoresNot analysed by the checklistProduct and category page optimisation
RankingsLinks to resources and SEO professionalsContent and backlinks

The two “not analysed” rows matter most. Wix says the checklist does not analyse blogs or business solutions like Wix Stores. If your traffic plan rests on a blog or a shop, a completed checklist tells you nothing about whether those pages are in good shape.

A homepage being edited

Does Wix do SEO for you?

It does part of the setup for you, and it prompts you through the rest of the setup. It does not do SEO in the sense that matters for rankings. No builder does. The work that moves a site up the results is the same on Wix as anywhere else.

Page-level metadata beyond the homepage. The checklist starts with the homepage. Every service page, location page and post needs its own title and description written for the query it targets. Keep titles specific and descriptions honest about what the page offers.

Internal linking. Part 2 nudges you to add internal links, which is the right instinct. A prompt is not a structure, though. Decide which pages matter most and link to them from the pages that already get attention. Our guide to internal linking for SEO covers how to plan that.

Content. A Wix site with five thin pages competes with every other site with five thin pages. The checklist’s keyword step helps you describe the homepage; it does not tell you which topics your audience searches for or which pages you are missing.

Links from other sites. Part 3 points to resources, but earning backlinks is outside what any builder can automate. For a new business, that usually starts with genuine local and industry mentions, not anything clever.

Keyword notes on paper

Is Wix bad for SEO?

The “Wix is bad for SEO” reputation tends to come from sites that stopped at setup. Someone builds an attractive homepage, fills in the checklist, publishes and waits. Nothing happens, and the builder gets the blame. The same site on any other platform would have the same problem: too few useful pages and no reason for anyone to link to them.

There are fair points on the other side. The checklist skips blogs and stores, so owners of those sites get less guidance than the green ticks suggest. And Search Console connection sits behind a Premium plan and a connected domain, so a free site misses the most useful free data source Google offers. Neither is a ranking penalty. Both are gaps you have to fill yourself.

If you are starting a site from scratch, our checklist for SEO on a new website sets out the first jobs in order, and it applies to Wix as much as to anything else.

The limit of this assessment

This post describes what Wix documents about its SEO Setup Checklist, as checked in October 2026. It does not test Wix’s page output, speed or other SEO settings outside the checklist, and builders change their features often. Before you decide anything on the strength of a single feature, check the current Wix Help Center and look at the source of your own published pages.

The conclusion does not depend on those details. Wix gives you a guided start and a connection to Google. After that, a Wix site ranks or does not for the same reasons as any other site: whether its pages answer real searches better than the competition, whether they are linked sensibly, and whether other sites think them worth linking to. Spend your effort there, not on whether to switch builders.

Frequently asked questions

Is Wix good for SEO?

Yes, a Wix site can rank. Its SEO Setup Checklist covers the setup basics; rankings still depend on your content, internal links and backlinks.

Does Wix do SEO for you?

Only the setup. The checklist guides homepage metadata, Google connection, contact details and internal links. Writing pages and earning links stay with you.

Do I need a Premium plan for Wix SEO?

To connect Google Search Console through the checklist, yes: Wix requires a Premium plan and a connected domain.

Does the checklist cover my blog or Wix Stores?

No. Wix says the checklist does not analyse blogs or business solutions like Wix Stores, so optimise those pages yourself.

The takeaway Wix handles the setup basics and connects you to Google on a Premium plan. It does not write your pages or earn your links, and those decide where you rank.
