Does Reddit help with SEO? The question usually arrives with a plan attached: post links in relevant communities, collect backlinks, rank. That plan gets the mechanism wrong. Reddit’s value to a site owner today has little to do with the links it passes and a lot to do with where Reddit threads now appear in Google, and who is reading them.
What Google and Reddit actually announced
In February 2024 Google published an expanded partnership with Reddit, written by Rajan Patel. It covered three things. Google gained access to Reddit’s Data API, described as “real-time, structured, unique content”. Reddit would use Google’s Vertex AI to improve search on Reddit itself. And Google set out to make Reddit content easier to find across its products.
The reason Google gave is the useful part for SEO: “people increasingly use Google to search for helpful content on Reddit to find product recommendations, travel advice and much more.” Google did not disclose any financial terms in that announcement, and any figure you see quoted for the deal did not come from it.

| What Google announced | What it means for site owners |
|---|---|
| Access to Reddit’s Data API, “real-time, structured, unique content” | Google has a direct, structured feed of Reddit discussion to draw on |
| Reddit to use Vertex AI for search on Reddit | Better search inside Reddit; no direct effect on your rankings |
| Reddit content made easier to find across Google products | Threads are more likely to sit in the results you are trying to win |
| No financial figures disclosed | Ignore any deal value quoted as if Google confirmed it |
Does Reddit help with SEO? First, it competes with you
The practical consequence is that Reddit threads compete in many searches, especially the ones Google named: product recommendations and travel advice. For an affiliate or review site, that means a slot that might have gone to another publisher can go to a discussion instead. You are no longer competing only with other sites built to rank.

Read that as a statement about search intent rather than a quirk of the algorithm. When a results page leans towards forum threads, the searcher wants first-hand opinions, not a polished roundup. Our guide to search intent covers how to read that from the page itself. A site that wants those queries has to offer the same thing threads do: real experience, specific detail and honest drawbacks.
It also means some queries are simply harder than they look in a keyword tool. Volume and difficulty scores do not tell you that the top results are threads with years of replies. Check the results page before committing a brief to a query, and treat a page full of discussions as a signal that a standard article may struggle.
Why Reddit backlinks are not the point
The received wisdom says Reddit is a link source. In practice, links posted on Reddit are typically nofollow, which tells search engines not to treat them as an endorsement. Our post on nofollow links explains how Google handles them. A campaign built to harvest Reddit links is chasing the weakest part of what Reddit offers.

What a thread can give you is exposure in front of people who are actively deciding. If someone asks for a recommendation and your product or guide is mentioned favourably, that mention travels with the thread into Google’s results. Readers can search your brand afterwards, and that interest is worth more than a link equity calculation suggests.
How to earn Reddit mentions without spamming
Mentions come from participation, not placement. The communities that rank are the ones with active moderation and clear rules, and most of them dislike self-promotion. Posting your own links into threads breaks those rules, gets accounts banned and, when done at scale to influence search, runs into Google’s spam policies too.
- Answer the question asked. Contribute something useful even when your site is not relevant to it. Reputation in a community is built over many replies.
- Disclose who you are. If you mention your own product or site, say that it is yours. Communities punish hidden promotion harder than open promotion.
- Read the rules first. Every community sets its own, and many forbid links or promotion entirely.
- Make something worth citing. The best Reddit mentions are other people linking to your work because it answered a question better than anything else.
Expect this to be slow. A new account dropping into a thread with a recommendation reads as marketing, however good the recommendation is, and regulars notice. An account with a history of useful answers in the same community reads as a person. If you cannot commit that time, you are better off making work good enough that other people bring it up without you.

Don’t use Reddit as a parasite host
One tactic deserves its own warning: publishing content on Reddit purely to borrow its ranking strength for your own commercial ends. That is parasite SEO by another name, and our post asking whether parasite SEO still works sets out why Google’s spam policies target exactly this pattern. It also tends to fail on Reddit’s own terms, because moderators and users remove promotional posts long before they rank.

The honest version of Reddit for SEO is slower and smaller. You join communities in your niche, help people, and let mentions happen. Separately, you study the threads that rank for your target queries, because they are a direct record of the questions, objections and language your audience uses.

Using Reddit as research, not just distribution
That second use is often the more valuable one. A thread that ranks for a product query shows you what real buyers ask, which alternatives they compare and which complaints recur. Those are the gaps a review or guide has to fill to compete with the thread. If the top answers all mention a drawback that no ranking article admits, your page has an obvious angle.
Watch how the thread mix in your results changes over time, too. Results that move towards discussions after an update tell you something about how Google is weighing first-hand experience for that query, and our algorithm archive covers how to read those shifts.
The limitation is that nobody outside Google can say how much of Reddit’s presence in results comes from the partnership and how much from searchers simply wanting forum answers. Google’s announcement describes access and intent, not ranking weights. Treat Reddit’s visibility as a fact of the results you are competing in, not a rule you can engineer.
Frequently asked questions
Does Reddit help with SEO?
Indirectly. Links from Reddit are typically nofollow, but genuine mentions in threads that rank can put your brand in front of people searching on Google.
What did the Google and Reddit partnership include?
Google gained access to Reddit’s Data API, Reddit would use Vertex AI to improve its own search, and Google aimed to make Reddit content easier to find across its products.
How much did Google pay Reddit?
Google’s announcement disclosed no financial figures, so any amount quoted did not come from Google’s post.
Is posting my links on Reddit a good SEO tactic?
No. It usually breaks community rules, the links are typically nofollow, and posting at scale to manipulate search conflicts with Google’s spam policies.
The takeaway Reddit helps with SEO as a place your brand gets discussed and as research into what searchers want, not as a link source. Participate honestly or not at all.
